FIELD ADVISORY RETRIEVING POLL 6/15/09 Our appreciation to Duane Yoder, Chairman of the WCA Field Advisory Board for providing this article. Please send your input to Duane at yoder@ugs.com Also, post your impressions and comments about this article at
What is Coefficiency of Inbreeding (COI)? Here are some links about this subject. http://www.canine-genetics.com/relation.htm http://www.dogstuff.info/playing_coi_sharp.html Basically, it is becoming evident that inbreeding and linebreeding are not producing enough genetic diversity. The COI number: 25% is extremely high and about as close as you can get: brother x sister, so we are hoping to produce pups with much lower, percentages of COI. Remember, even if you think you are outcrossing, there may be distant relatives on both sides within 8 generations. Weimaraners Pedigrees is a worldwide study of over 125, 000 Weimaraner pedigrees. This work is an ongoing project by Sylvia Voorn and Menno Vlaanderen of The Netherlands. Our appreciation to Sylvia & Menno for their excellent work. To check out your dogs (inbred percentage or COI) go to www.weimaranerpedigrees.com Sign up for an account, search dogs, put in a dog's name, then click on "show dog info" scroll down to find the "inbred percentage" This will also show you the repeating relatives in the dog's pedigree. You can also do virtual matings on the website and it will show you the inbred percentage.
